Remember Your Nurses!

Nurse bringing baby to meet her Grandma at a recent hospital birth we attended.

When preparing for the birth of your child you make choices about your medical care (OB or Midwife?) and which hospital to deliver at, if you want a doula supporting you, and which newborn procedures you will consent to/opt out of. But what about the individuals who have a main supporting role? That’s right, I’m talking about your nurses! Sometimes these important players are overlooked in planning for your baby’s arrival be

cause you don’t get to meet them in advance. But that doesn’t make their role any less vital. Did you know your nurse works 12 hour shifts and must go to work no matter the weather? Even in the middle of a snow storm hospital nurses are committed to providing exceptional care. At Blissful Birthing we love nurses and truly believe they play an integral role in your positive birth experience!

Remember Your Nurses

These key players in your birth experience deserve recognition for a job well-done! That’s why we encourage our clients to consider them when packing their hospital bag. This can be as simple or as “over the top” as you want. When asked what we think our clients should bring to their nurses, we suggest the following:

  • Edible Arrangements
  • Coffee & Bagels/Donuts
  • Pocket-Sized unscented hand lotion
  • Nice pens
  • Cookies – store-bought and individually wrapped are ideal
  • Bite-Size candy
  • Veggie Platter
  • Wraps
  • Protein Bars
  • Call-in for pizzas
  • A letter to hospital administration recognizing the nurses by name for their hard work (Personally, we think this is one of the best things you can do!)

We also suggest avoiding:

  • Home-baked items
  • Anything containing peanuts or tree nuts
  • Anything messy
