What to Expect at Baby’s First Dental Visit

Establishing good oral health habits begins early. We spoke with Dr. Minerva Patel, a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist with 17 years experience, to learn about her dental practice and laying the foundation for good oral health in babies.

How do I know that it is time to take my baby to the dentist for his/her first exam?

westchester pediatric dentistThe American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a visit to the dentist no later than six months after a tooth has erupted. This is so that a dental home can be established and the parents have a trusted source for information that may include prevention and growth and developmental issues.

What can I expect when I bring my baby to the dentist for the first time?

The first visit for a one year old usually includes a lengthy discussion with the doctor and hygienist about parental concerns and incorporating a prevention program in order to keep the baby/child cavity free

What is the difference between a family dentist and a pediatric dentist? Why should I bring my baby to a pediatric dentist?

A family dentist is a wonderful starting point, but they do not have the knowledge and expertise of a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. A Pediatric Dentist has furthered their education in a 2-3 year program that focuses solely on child growth and development. Pediatric dentists are also on the forefront of prevention techniques.

What makes your dental practice unique?

We are a true private practice and do not allow insurance companies to dictate our standard of care. Our staff will help parents fill out insurance forms as long as they bring them to the visit! We have a program that includes the first visit before the age of 2 at no cost, because we strongly believe in establishing a prevention program for every child. The parents have access to the doctor 24 hours a day via email and text/cell phone. We pride ourselves on taking care of every child as if they were our own.
